The camera also has to be able to focus fast, or all your photos will be blurry, which is very annoying. Also don't be afraid of taking lots of photos, you need to in order to get a good action photo. If there is good action in your viewfinder, keep your finger on the shutter until the action stops.

Volleyball Sports Photography Tips
Below you will find links to all of our digital volleyball action sports photography tips. These volleyball photography tips will all help you bring your action photography to the next level. We will constantly add new tips, and probably reorganize and add photo examples, so make sure you check back here in the future. Also, if you can't find information on a question you have, please contact us here and we will do our best to answer your question. By the way, these volleyball photography tips aren't in any special order.
Tip #1) You Need A Fast Digital Camera....In order to take good sports photographs, you NEED a fast camera, one that can take at least 5 or more frames per second(FPS). You need that to be able to get many shots in a row to stop the action and have a chance at getting the perfect action photo.
Tip #2) You Need A Fast Shutter Button Finger....In order to get great action sports photographs, you need to keep your finger on the shutter button at all times and when you think something good is going to happen, like a volleyball player making a great spike or dig, or a football player scoring a touchdown or making a great catch, you need to hold the shutter button down until the action has stopped.
Tip #3) You Need Lot's Of Memory Card Space....You should always carry extra memory cards and batteries with you when you are out taking photographs. Nothing is worse than having a great photo opportunity and your memory card is full or your camera or flash battery goes dead. It doesn't cost that much to have a backup, and it will save you a lot of trouble.
Tip #4) You Need To Take Many Photos....When taking photos of action sports you need to take lot's of photos in order to get something great. More is better. By taking more photos you will have more to choose from and you might capture something you wouldn't have if you took only a few photos.
Tip #5) You Need Fast Lenses....When you talk about fast lenses that can mean 2 different things. One it could mean fast because it has a large max aperture like f/1.2 or f/1.4 or f/2.8 so it allows lot's of light in the camera allowing you to have a fast shutter speed. For Sports photography, you need big lenses to zoom into the action, and so most of them big and more expensive lenses have max apertures of f/2.8 or f/4 or f/5.6. They allow lot's of light into the lens so you can have fast shutter speeds of 1/250th of a second or higher.
Tip #6) Fixed Aperture Lenses Work Best....Most cheaper lenses don't have fixed apertures, so when you set the aperture value to the smallest number like F3.8 with the lens at the widest zoom position, when you zoom out to the telephoto position, the aperture value will go up to like F5.6 and reduce the light into your camera.
Tip #7) Don't Miss Great Shots Because Of Daydreaming....Daydreaming and sports photography are not a good combination if you want to get some great action sports photos. You must always be alert and ready for the next good action sequence to happen. If you are daydreaming and looking at some cute girls in the bleachers, you will be missing some good action shots.
Tip #8) Make Sure You Fill The Viewfinder With The Action....When you are photographing some great sports action, it is really important to make sure you fill the viewfinder with the action. If you see professional sports photographs, the main subject usually fills the frame of the photo, and it is in sharp focus. There is never a question about who the main subject is. In so many amateur sports photographs, main subjects are just a little dot in the photograph, they are so small, and then there is so much wasted space around the subjects.
Tip #9) Use Fill Flash With Dim Lighting....Many times while taking high school sports photography, like basketball or volleyball, the lighting in the gyms is pretty dim. Even if you use a really bright lens like a 50mm f/1.2, the colors in the photos and faces of the players just won't look very good.
Tip #10) Use A Flash Bracket With Fill Flash....If you read sports photography tip #9, you know that fill flash can improve your sports photography quality in dim lighting scenes. To help reduce or eliminate the negative effects of using fill flash, the use of the flash bracket is highly recommended.
Tip #11) Use A Monopod To Support Heavy Cameras....If you have a large digital SLR camera, plus a huge 300mm f/2.8 lens, and a flash and flash bracket, all that gets very heavy to hold steady for many hours. You really should invest in a steady monopod to help support all your photography equipment.
Tip #12) Shutter Speed At Least 1/250th Of A Second....In most action sports photography, but not all the time, you will want to freeze the action and get a nice crisp clear photo. In order to stop the action and have minimal blur, your shutter speed should be at least 1/250th of a second.
Tip #13) Carry Extra Fully Charged Batteries....You should always carry extra batteries with you when you are out taking sports photography. Nothing is worse than having a great photo opportunity and your camera or flash battery goes dead. It doesn't cost that much to have a backup, and it will save you a lot of trouble.
Tip #14) Find A Good Location And Angle For Shooting Volleyball....Volleyball photography can be a little difficult to master. The ball moves around so fast and it is difficult to follow the ball, so it takes some practice to master. Finding a good location and shooting angle is very important. You have a lot of players to shoot around and the volleyball net and posts, and referees, so you need to find a good location and shooting angle if you want to get some great volleyball shots.
One good location and angle is to get up higher than the players and net, and then depending on what teams faces you want to get, choose a spot where you will be shooting towards their faces. If you want to get a team spiking the ball, then you should be shooting from the opposite side of the net, up higher than the net, and somewhere along the side or behind the other teams court area.
Tip #15) Try Following One Active Player....Since it is difficult to know where the ball is going in volleyball, try following one active player with your camera. If you follow one player it will be much easier to get good action volleyball shots, because you will be able to tell when that player is going to do something and then you could take a bunch of photos when they spike the ball or whatever.
